How a Heat Pump Makes Hot Water
A heat pump doesn’t create heat to make hot water; instead, it cleverly moves existing heat from the surrounding air and transfers it to the water in a storage tank. Think of it as a refrigerator working in reverse. While a fridge pulls heat from inside and releases it into the room, a heat pump water heater pulls heat from the ambient air and concentrates it to heat your water. This process makes them incredibly energy-efficient, often two to three times more so than traditional electric resistance water heaters
The Key Components of a Heat Pump
- Evaporator: Absorbs heat from the surrounding air to turn the liquid refrigerant into a gas.
- Compressor: Compresses the refrigerant gas, significantly increasing its temperature.
- Condenser: Transfers heat from the hot refrigerant to the water, turning the gas back into a liquid.
- Expansion Valve: Reduces the pressure of the high-pressure liquid refrigerant, making it cold again.
